Legendary Actress for a Legendary Franchise
The Borderlands film took a major step forward today as they officially announced Cate Blanchett. The Oscar winning actress will be playing the Siren Lilith in the film by Eli Roth.
Roth was certainly pretty excited with the casting in his statement about Blanchett’s hiring.
“I’m so lucky to have the amazing Cate Blanchett starring in Borderlands. We had the most incredible collaboration together on The House with a Clock in Its Walls, and I believe there’s nothing she can’t do. From drama to comedy and now action, Cate makes every scene sing. Working with her is truly a director’s dream come true, and I feel so fortunate that I get to do it again on an even bigger scale. Everyone brings their A-game to work with Cate, and I know together we’re going to create another iconic character in her already storied career.”
The Borderlands film has been taking the kinda slow but steady approach to the project. Historically speaking, video game movie adaptations are usually pretty rough. More recently though, they seem to have had a sorta renaissance of sorts.
Detective Pikachu was entertaining, mostly due to the casting of Ryan Reynolds and the film not taking itself seriously. Following up to that with the Sonic movie, which came back from disaster, now is the time to invest in the genre.
If Anyone Can Do it, Roth Can
When a Borderlands film was announced by Gearbox, fans were obviously pretty meh on the whole idea. While Borderlands has a great cult following from gamers, it’s not exactly movie material. Possibly in the form of an animated series, but director Eli Roth though differently.
Eli Roth might be one of those names that you know but you struggle to place what he’s made. He’s mostly a big horror person, behind films like Hostel, Grindhouse and Hemlock Grove series.
But he has a good sense of humor and a dark sarcastic wit that could really benefit a Borderlands movie. Especially because if you leave out the humor from Borderlands, you haven’t really made Borderlands.
Personally, we think Roth could be the right guy for the job. He’s been pretty enthusiastic, and getting Cate Blanchett onboard goes a long way to establishing a portfolio. We’re cautiously optimistic for the movie.
