“Crashing this plane… With no Survivors!”

Leave it to Christopher Nolan and crew to pull something like this for authenticity. Don’t feel like you have the time and need to CGI a plane blowing up? Screw it, just crash a 747 into a hanger and call it a day.

I mean, he did already crash a jet filming The Dark Knight Rises. And he lost an IMAX Camera when crashing a replica WWII Jet while filming Dunkirk… Just saying, he has a track record of pushing for realism over sitting in an editing booth.

Nolan is pretty well known among filmmakers and fans as wanting to rely on more practical effects when possible. Not to say that the rumor of Nolan hating CGI is real, he actually loves it. But, when given the opportunity to do something for real, he prefers to opt in for that chance.

Lends the films he makes much more visceral, authentic and intense. Especially in films like Dunkirk and Inception. 

In this case, while filming one of the scenes for his upcoming film Tenet, Nolan wanted to have a scene where a 747 breaks through a wall. Then he also wanted the 747 to explode, so he took it to his budget team. 

“I planned to do it using miniatures and set-piece builds and a combination of visual effects and all the rest. We started to run the numbers… It became apparent that it would actually be more efficient to buy a real plane of the real size, and perform this sequence for real in camera, rather than build miniatures or go the CG route.”

He’s Done Nothing But Improve

The fact that a film by Nolan is more cost effective to purchase a 747 is amazing. Scale alone in this film is already above most action films outside of possibly Mission Impossible. Even the cast think that Nolan’s attention to detail and scale is astronomical. 

Considering that Nolan is also known for huge plots that revolve around the manipulation of time, Tenet is gonna be big. Back when Inception was released, fans started to realize just how different Nolan is as a filmmaker. Long time fans will remember The Prestige which also played with time as a storytelling piece. 

Christopher Nolan is just insanely dedicated to telling stories that make your mind swirl. Even the cast of the upcoming film said they were super confused about the plot. So if you were hoping for a brain dead film, then wait for something else.

As for the rest of us, Tenet is easily one of our most anticipated films of this year. Seeing the amount of love, detail and scale put into this film has us almost as giddy as hearing about the Snyder Cut.
