Hats Off to You Mr. Gunn
It’s like watching the Snyder Cut all over again. After the news broke that Zack Snyder’s original Justice League would be released, everyone wants a slice of the pie. One person in particular believes that he should get the same treatment, David Ayer who directed Suicide Squad.
If you’re familiar with the behind the scenes story, then this should not be a surprise to you. For those of you who have no idea what we’re talking about, here’s a brief summary for you.
When Suicide Squad was in development, it was originally planned to be much longer, more mature and violent. Effectively, Ayer was trying to push the envelope and tell a darker story with elements of humor sprinkled in.
After most of the movie was filmed and rendered, Warner Bros had a test viewing with the execs. Unfortunately, they did not care for the darker tone and the more fleshed out character stories. They wanted to replicate the success of the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
So they ordered a subsequent reshoot of close to 90% of the movie, gave it a new budget and a new crew. One of the biggest mistakes of which was hiring a new editing crew that butchered the original version. Leading to horrible reception among fans and critics, although it did make a lot of money.
Years following the release, Ayer has been very vocal about how annoyed he was with the results of the film. Saying that he had so much more planned and so much more to say. In particular he was upset at how much of the character stories got cut. Including most of Jared Leto’s Joker footage.
What’s Happening today?
Fast forward to May 2020, now that we have official confirmation for the Snyder Cut, will we get an Ayer cut? Well, the director for the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel, James Gunn, has an opinion on it.
James, I really appreciate that, however this crazy ride unfolds. You’re good people and no lie – I can’t wait to see your take on these characters – you’re a master filmmaker https://t.co/1mwaHkKqpu

In a Tweet, Gunn shared how he doesn’t believe that an Ayer Cut would be detrimental to his sequel. Nor does he believe that it should not be released. Which prompted a pretty healthy response from Ayer.
It would seem that Gunn really has a lot of faith in his film, which is already done filming and is currently in editing. Overall that’s a good attitude to have, considering that if Snyder Cut is a success, it would make sense to double down.
Right now there’s no talks or official confirmations on anything concerning an Ayer cut. Even though the director has been adamant and vocal about how easy it would be to make the changes required. Remember, most of the footage still exists and was completed, it was just removed.
What do you think of Ayer’s desire to see a new Cut of Suicide Squad? Would you be down to pay money for it? Let us know in the comments below!
